Don Foster MP and a set of constituents stand outside Bear Flat Post Office.
Don and local residents campaign against the closure of the Bear Flat post office.

Having saved both Bear Flat and Lower Weston post offices, unfortunately Southgate did not survive the chop. This despite the fact that there is the brand new Southgate development going on, with 93 homes and over 60 shops to go in.

Also, queues at the City Centre post office are already very long at peak times.

Don Foster MP has offered to work with Post Office Ltd in putting a branch into the new Southgate development.

Of the four Post Offices in Bath scheduled for closure, two have been saved! Bear Flat and Lower Weston branches will remain open, after huge public opposition and a Liberal Democrat campaign.

In what is really an unprecedented success rate, two Bath communties are now celebrating the saving of their post offices. In Bristol and Somerset, 62 of the 65 planned for closure are to be shut. Of the three saved, two were in Bath.

Liberal Democrats campaigned hard throughout the consultation, and encouraged as many people as possible to submit their own objections to the consultation team. We collected around 5,000 signatures on petitions across Bath and submitted these to the post office.

Don Foster MP also took part in a walk from an area near to Lower Weston post office up to the alternative in Weston village. Bristol rugby head coach, and local resident, Richard Hill, took part in the walk. With a number of elderly and disabled residents it took 1 hour to reach Weston. This showed that the suggested alternative was not practical.

The Post Office Ltd have not yet announced if they will close any further branches as a result of these two being saved. Don Foster MP will be campaigning just as hard should there be any further closures proposed in Bath.
