Don Foster calls for greater sun safety in Bath’s schools

July 18, 2023 by admin in News

Don Foster MP has today pledged his support for the Cancer Research UK ‘Sunsmart’ campaign, calling for a sun safety policy to protect children from skin cancer.

A 2011 survey revealed that nearly 40 per cent of schoolâ€age children have arrived home with sunburn sustained at school. Such over-exposure to the sun considerably increases a child’s risk of skin cancer in later life.

The findings have uncovered an urgent need for better sun education and protection in schools. Cancer Research UK has already provided information to help schools develop their own sun safe strategies. However, only 1200 primary schools in England have applied for the sun protection policy pack.

Commenting Don Foster said, “Young people need to be made aware of the dangers of sun exposure. It is imperative that we take greater steps to minimise the risks faced by our children when at school.”

“I support Cancer Research UK in their calls for a greater focus on sun safety. It is crucial that we listen to these recommendations and do all that we can to protect future generations from skin cancer.”

“Schools in Bath can still benefit from signing up to receive the packs and from using the online resources. I therefore call on all primary schools and nurseries to show their support by getting involved and spreading the message before the summer break”
