Don Foster hails BBC World Service as essential for Democracy

Don Foster,MP and co-chair of the Liberal Democrat back bench committee for Culture, Media and Sport has today hailed the BBC World Service as essential for Democracy. Don Foster has welcomed a motion passed in the House of Commons which enables the Government to re-think the funding of the World Service.

Commenting, Don Foster said, “In my opinion, a 16% cut in funding to the World service is disproportionate and unjustifiable. Recent events have shown the importance of the World Service. People around the world listen to the World Service for trusted information.

He continued, “I am particularly concerned with the cuts to politically and economically important services such as the Arabic, Hindi and Mandarin services. I am delighted that so many of colleagues in the House have chosen to join me in supporting this motion”.
