Don Foster MP has welcomed confirmation that Bath and North East Somerset Council could scrap the BRT from the transport package without jeopardising government funding. The BRT is the most controversial element of the £59 million Bath transport package.

Mr Foster has secured proof that this is the case after writing to the transport minister Norman Baker MP. Responding Mr Baker confirmed that this move would not jeopardise any funding application.

A Department of Transport statement said, “We have made it clear that we expect local authorities to take all possible steps to reduce the funding being requested from the Department for Transport.

“They may do this by de-scoping, ie removing some elements of the scheme. We have not set any limits on the level of de-scoping that would be allowed but clearly any resulting proposals would still need to perform well against our key criteria to stand a good chance of funding.”

Commenting Don Foster said, “The message is simple. What the council has told us or have implied is that by removing the BRT, we would effectively lose any chance of Government funding. This letter makes it clear that that is not the case”.
