Don Foster promises to defy government over ban on wild animals in circuses

June 20, 2023 by admin in News

Don Foster MP has today promised to defy the government and vote in support of banning wild animals in circuses. An estimated 37 wild animals currently perform in three UK circuses. Circus life has a harmful effect on the welfare of many species and scientific research shows that the most commonly used wild animals are the least suited to this existence.

A vote will occur after a backbench debate on the subject on Thursday 23rd June. Don Foster has long argued that using wild animals in circuses was out-dated and undermined the UKs reputation on animal welfare and has pledged his support to the motion.

Commenting Don Foster said, “This is a matter of principle. It is not right for humans to keep animals in unsuitable conditions for their own entertainment. Circus animals spend a maximum of 9% of their time training and performing, and the rest confined to cages, wagons or typically small and inadequate enclosures”.

“I am calling on the Government to lead the way on animal welfare by backing this motion which calls for the complete ban of wild animals in circuses”

Notes to editor:

The backbench motion reads: “That this House directs the Government to use its powers under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to introduce a regulation banning the use of all wild animals in circuses.”
