To mark this year’s National Market Day, on Saturday 23 June, Bath MP, Don Foster joined Liberal Democrat Councillors Manda Rigby (Abbey) and Doug Nicol (Kingsmead) in a visit to two of Bath’s most popular markets.

Starting at the historic Guildhall Market, before moving onto the Bath Farmers Market at Green Park Station, the visit marked the start of Love Your Local Market Fortnight which runs from 23 June to 8 July 2012.

Love Your Local Market Fortnight aims to celebrate the role that markets can play in supporting new traders and attracting visitors into the town. Across the country markets will be holding events such as cooking demos, music workshops and children’s activities to celebrate.

Commenting Don Foster said:

“Throughout the year Bath hosts a variety of fantastic markets which are not only enjoyable to visit but also incredibly useful.”

“Markets such as the Guildhall and Bath Farmers Markets are an important part of the retail mix in the city and bring energy to the centre. They increase competition and choice while offering an ideal platform for micro-businesses and start-ups.”

“I would urge as many Bath residents as possible to make the trip to a nearby market and see what is on offer”

Commenting on the initiative, Cllr Cherry Beath, B&NES Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development added:

“It’s great to see Don, Manda and Doug visiting our local markets on National Market Day.”

“Bath is a prime draw for markets of all kinds, both in the centre, and the surrounding areas. They are a vital part of our local economy we want to encourage more market days, involving locally sourced produce and independent businesses.

“The markets in Bath have a real buzz about them, and foster a sense of community where people can meet up, chat with the stall holders and get really good products at the same time.”
