Foster “bitterly disappointedâ€ by Ensleigh closure

The Ministry of Defence has today announced that it will be closing its site at Ensleigh, thereby ending a seven decade link with Bath. The decision to close two other MOD sites at Warminster Road and Foxhill had previously been taken, though it was hoped Ensleigh would remain open.

B&NES Council, trade unions and local MPs had lobbied the MOD to keep the Ensleigh site however todays decision will now see 2600 staff relocated to Abbey Wood, Bristol.

Commenting on the move, Don Foster said:

“I am bitterly disappointed that the decision has been taken to close the Ensleigh MOD site. Today is a very sad day and the move ends a proud relationship between Bath and the Ministry of Defence that has lasted 72 years.

“Despite lobbying from all parties in B&NES Council, local trade unions and both local MPs, compelling arguments to keep 1500 MOD staff in Bath have been overlooked by the Government.

“From the outset, I have argued that a full relocation to Abbey Wood is bad for Bath, bad for the MOD and most importantly bad for the staff. The move will put further pressure on our already crowded transport network and I remain unconvinced that the MOD will reap the business benefits they claim will follow from relocation.

“Despite this disappointment, I will now be working to ensure that the Ensleigh site is now used for much needed affordable housing. Its future use must benefit Bath and therefore I will be seeking assurances from the Government that the site will not simply be sold to the highest bidder.”
