As Liberal Democrat spokesman for culture, media and sport Don Foster commented on the BBC over its ‘over staffing’ of the Dale Farm eviction.

The BBC sent six satellite crews, a caravan providing accomadation and refreshments along with over 20 members of staff to cover the Dale Farm eviction story.

Don Foster stated that this was, “ludicrous over staffing and hardly a good way to get public sympathy for the 20% budget cuts facing the BBC.”

Don Foster MP calls for greater support for young runaways

October 24, 2023 by admin in News

Don Foster MP has backed calls for greater support for the country’s young runaways.

Don pledged his support for this vital cause following the launch of The Children’s Society’s new report, Make Runaways Safe, which reveals that children as young as eight are running away from home or care. In most cases they are not being reported to the authorities by their parents and carers when they go missing.

The Children’s Society is calling on the Government to improve the support for the 100,000 children who run away from home each year.

The report found that many young runaways fall into grave danger and are at risk of harm, physical abuse or sexual exploitation.

The Children’s Society is calling for a national safety net to be put in place for every child who runs away.

This would include the government drawing up a national runaways’ action plan to significantly boost help and support for everyone involved.

Commenting, Don Foster MP said: “The situation faced by children who run away in this country is simply unacceptable. They must be given a greater level of support and this must be a priority for government.”

The Children’s Society’s Chief Executive Bob Reitemeier added, “Every child who runs away should run to safety. Society is failing young runaways, condemning tens of thousands of children to misery and danger by failing to provide an adequate safety net to break their fall. “

Don Foster has signed EDM 2285 on the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee Report on Pub Companies. The EDM reads:

That this House welcomes the finalreport by the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee on Pub Companies (Tenth Report of Session 2010-12, HC 1369-I), which found that industry self-regulation has failed and therefore called for the introduction of a statutory code of practicefor pub companies including that over a period of time all new lessees should be offered a free of tie lease with an open market rent review based on Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ guidance; supports the Committee’s call for a code adjudicator; notes the Government’s commitment to legislate to reform in line with the previous Government’s plan announced in March 2010; further notes that nearly twice as many tied pubs are closingas free of tie pubs; believes that reforms recommended by the Select Committee, together with a guest beer option for lessees who choose to remain tied, will help prevent the closure of further valued community pubs by making rents fairer and allowing tied licensees to buy beer and other products on the open market at competitive prices, which will allow many more pubs to succeed and thrive, which will assistwith economic growth; further believes that these reforms will revitalise and rejuvenate the sector and promote entrepreneurship through more diverse ownership; and calls on the Government to act on the Select Committee’s recommendations and announce a timetable for the consultation as quickly as possible on how it intends to implement the reforms.
