A leading MP has called on the BBC to explain their controversial TV deal with Sky Sports amid continued unrest from Formula One fans in the UK.

Almost 25,000 petrol-heads have signed an online government petition aimed at keeping the sport solely on terrestrial television after the BBC announced they would share the rights with Sky from next season.

On the move: F1 will be screened on Sky Sports next season

The new seven-year contract will see the BBC screen half of the races with the other half exclusively on Sky Sports.

F1 fans deserve explanation over BBC and BSkyB deal, says MP

September 6, 2023 by admin in News

The Liberal Democrat culture spokesman, Don Foster, has written to BBC director general Mark Thompson demanding an explanation of the corporation’s Formula One deal with BSkyB.

Foster said there were “glaring problems” with accounts given by the BBC, Sky and Formula One about the deal, which will take some races away from free-to-air TV for the first time.

Sky will broadcast all the Formula One races and practice sessions from next season, with the BBC broadcasting half of the races. Live TV coverage of Formula One reverted to the BBC in 2009 after 13 years on ITV.

“I am not complaining about the realities of the BBC, BSkyB and FOM [Formula One Management] having their own interests. Nor do I doubt that those involved in this arrangement worked hard to balance their competing aims,” Foster said in the letter, seen by the Guardian.

BBC bosses face grilling from MPs over controversial Formula One rights' sharing deal

September 6, 2023 by admin in News

BBC Director General Mark Thompson faces a grilling from furious MPs demanding to know the truth behind the corporation’s controversial Formula 1 rights’ deal.

Don Foster, Lib Dem spokesman for Culture, Media and Sport, has written to the BBC chief asking for answers about their tie-up with Sky Sports, which will deprive many fans from seeing all the races.

In a letter seen by the Mirror, Mr Foster said: “The least fans deserve is a clear account of what happened.”

The new deal, which comes into force next season, will see Sky Sports, which viewers have to pay for, broadcast all of the races live, while the BBC will show only half of the races simultaneously.
