Lib Dems: Use BBC cash to promote broadband

A leading Liberal Democrat MP has suggested that BBC money should be used to generate further demand for high-speed broadband services.

Don Foster, co-chairman of the party’s Policy Committee on Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, said that major communications companies were not investing in improving Britain’s broadband network because there was insufficient evidence of the demand for new services.

“The funding set aside within the BBC’s budget for broadband ought to be used much more about demand stimulation than is currently the plan,” said Mr Foster. He highlighted recent statistics that suggested, especially among older people, broadband take-up remains stubbornly low.
