Brent-East Elects A Lib Dem MP

"This is not just a big boost for the Liberal Democrats, it is a big boost for British politics. We have shown that there is no such thing as a no-go area for the Liberal Democrats," said Charles Kennedy. "In Britain's most diverse community, we have shown that we can speak for every section of society and the Liberal Democrat message is one they want to hear and support."

Main ImageSarah Teather has taken the former Labour stronghold of Brent East in a sensational by-election victory on Thursday September 18th. She took the seat with a swing of nearly 30%, leaving the Conservatives trailing in a poor third place.

Sarah Teather (Lib Dem) 8,158
Labour 7,040
Conservatives 3,368

Others 2,286

Lib Dem majority 1,118

Swings 29% (Lab to Lib Dem)
15% (Tory to Lib Dem)

Don Foster, MP for Bath said "This is an historic moment for the Liberal Democrat Party. The tide is turning against New Labour, but it remains well out for the Conservatives. I'm looking forward to working with Sarah in the Commons, and I congratulate her on her success.

"I'm delighted that members of the Liberal Democrats from Bath also played a part in Sarah's success. Volunteers from the city who have taken time to visit Brent East and campaign for Sarah have done the Party proud".
