90 Day Defeat, Good Day for Commons

Don has welcomed the vote against detaining terrorist suspects for 90. The Government lost the vote by 322 to 291. A subsequent vote in favour of 28 day detention was backed by 323 votes to 290.

Main ImageCommenting, Don said:

“This is a good day for the House of Commons. The Government has simply failed to make the case for 90 day detention without charge.

“Mr Blair has attempted to push through this change without providing the necessary arguments in support of it, and his refusal to reach a compromise with the opposition parties and his own backbenchers has led to this defeat. This is, therefore, quite rightly a humiliation for the Prime Minister, and a defeat for an increasingly authoritarian Government.”

“I am pleased that the Liberal Democrats have played their part in preventing people being detained for 90 days without charges being brought against them. As we saw in Northern Ireland, measures like that only lead to the recruitment of more terrorists."
