Government must reform Tax Credits

Commenting on the release of the Public Accounts Committee report on Tax Credits, Don said:

“Today’s report is a terrible indictment of a tax credit system set up with the best of intentions but which is now burdened with the very worst administration.

"Constituents approach me on an almost daily basis asking for assistance with tax credit issues, which can be incredibly complicated.

"The tax credit system was meant to help the poorest families in society, but due to systemic failures and administrative incompetence it has become a system which many of the most vulnerable are scared to enter."

In 2004-05 almost 2 million people were overpaid tax credits at a cost of £1.8billion and the Public Accounts Committee report revealed today that the figure for 2005-06 stands at £1.4billion.

Don also recently signed a Commons motions calling on the Government to reform the tax credits system.

Commenting further, Don said:

"The Government must bring forward proposals to return to fixed awards of tax credits which deliver stability to families on low incomes, not stress and further money worries."
