City Post Offices under threat

Don has launched a campaign to save the city’s remaining Post Offices

Don's campaign follows the Government's announcement that 2,500 Post Offices will close across the country. 4,000 Post Offices have closed since Labour came to power in 1997.

In February 2008 a consultation will begin to decide which Post Offices in the Bath area could face closure.

Commenting, Don said:

"During the last round of closures, Bath lost a third of its Post Offices; down from 19 to just 13.

"During the next round nearly one in five Post Offices will be closed. This could result in two or three closures in Bath which would leave the city with only ten Post Offices to serve nearly 100,000 residents.

"Last time round, no notice was taken of the views of local people who wanted their local Post Office saved. So, before the formal consultation has even started, I want local people to know of the dangers and to give them time to make their views known.

"I am distributing petitions to all Post Offices in the city and would urge local residents to sign them so we can demonstrate the strength of feeling against further closures.

"I have also written to the Chief Executive of Post Office Ltd, David Mills to express my strong objection to any further Post Office closures in Bath."
