Original Olympic budget just a stab in the dark

Commenting on today’s [Tuesday] Public Accounts Committee report on the budget for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Don said:

“This report shows the figures for the original Olympic bid were at best a stab in the dark. The fact that the Government missed out so many foreseeable costs has further damaged confidence in its ability to manage budgets.

"With so much taxpayers' money at stake, the public has a right to know how such costly mistakes were made and deserve an absolute commitment that there will be no further increases in the budget.

"The raid on the lottery funds will have a damaging impact on good causes, so the least we should expect is for the money to be well spent. That's why the startling lack of clarity in the current Olympic legacy plan is so worrying.

"The Olympics still offer a tremendous opportunity to create a positive legacy for grassroots sport, culture and tourism. But that will only be delivered through detailed and thorough planning."
