Don Foster MP*

Bath’s MP, Don Foster, responding to the publication of the Higher Education Bill, said:

"Having benefited from free university education themselves, Government ministers are now pulling up the ladder of opportunity behind them. Generations of future students will be forced into debts, with many put off going into higher education altogether."

"Vice Chancellors of Britain's top universities have today said that the Government's plans will not raise enough extra money for universities. The Tories policy is a joke. The Liberal Democrats are the only party with a viable alternative, prepared to abolish all student fees and to fund our universities from progressive taxation.

"We now have a situation where students, vice chancellors, parents, lecturers, and three quarters of MP's are opposed to these proposals so why is the Government pressing forward?

"This Bill isn't just about introducing top-up fees, it's about Blair attempting to change the face of higher education forever, by shifting responsibility from the State to the individual.

"Labour's vision for higher education is the stuff of nightmares; a multi-tiered product accessed on the ability to pay, with universities valuing their courses on price rather than quality.

"All Labour MPs supporting this Bill are breaking their 2001 manifesto pledge not to introduce top-up fees. Now is the time for them to stand up and be counted."
