Commenting on the Government's U-turn on gap years on the final day of the Higher Education Bill in the Commons, Don said:

"We are delighted that the Government has finally accepted our argument that a failure to provide a fees concession for those wanting to take a gap year in 2005 would have been deeply damaging to students, gap year organisations and universities.

“Advantage, Men!” - Foster
Ahead of today's first match at Wimbledon, Bath’s MP, Don Foster, who is the Liberal Democrat’s Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, revealed that out of the four Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments (Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open and French Open), Wimbledon has the largest gap in prize money between the winning man and the winning lady of £42,000.


FOSTER TAKES AXE THE TAX TO NO 10
Bath's MP, Don Foster, has delivered a petition to the Prime Minister, calling for Council Tax to be scrapped.

The petition, which included over thousand names from Bath residents, calls on the Government to replace Council Tax with a fairer local income tax.

FOSTER GOES THE EXTRA MILE!
Bath's MP, Don Foster, is today certainly practising what he preaches!

Having gained something of a reputation for frequently voicing his concerns about rising levels of obesity and lack of fitness, especially amongst children, not only was Don one of the first MPs to cross the finishing line in the annual Parliamentary Bike Ride held this morning, he has also joined fellow MPs, Government Ministers and Peers in running the "Westminster Mile" in aid of the BBC charity, Sport Relief.

REALITY SHOWS ARE TAKING OVER OUR TVs
Ahead of today’s start of the 5th series of ‘Big Brother’, research by the Liberal Democrats has shown that the number of reality shows aired mushroomed from 2 in 2000 to 13 in the first 5 months of 2004. At this rate, there will have been 28 by the end of this year.

THOMPSON DG: BBC’S BOON IS CHANNEL 4’s HEADACHE
Commenting on the appointment of Mark Thompson as new BBC Director General, Don said:

“I welcome this appointment.

“Mark Thompson must now engage with the charter review process so that the BBC of the future is free to operate without excessive political interference and is not slave to commercial pressures and the ratings war.
