Encourage 'Green' Fuels, But Cut Congestion Too, Mr. Darling
Commenting today on the publication of the Institute of Public Policy Research's 'Tomorrow's Low Carbon Cars' report criticising the Government's tax strategy for greener fuels, Bath's MP Don Foster who is Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, said:

"It's clear from the report that the Government must do more to promote greener fuels and make sure that it's only genuinely green fuels that benefit from tax breaks."

"Current transport arrangements are hugely damaging to the environment. Greener fuels can help, but much more is needed.

"For example, transporting a tonne of freight by rail instead of road cuts CO2 emissions by 80%. So why isn't the Government doing more to persuade Royal Mail to reverse its decision to abandon the railways?

"The Government must tackle the 'remorseless rise' in congestion by providing safe, reliable and affordable alternatives to road use."
