Government Miss Transport Targets

A damning account of the Government's failure to meet its own transport targets, published today, has been welcomed by Don Foster MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary.

'A New Deal for Transport? - The UK's Struggle with the Sustainable Transport Agenda' confirms Liberal Democrat predictions that the Government would fail to meet most of its targets regarding cleaner fuels, road maintenance and traffic growth, amongst others.

Don Foster MP said:

"Liberal Democrats warned the Government over a year ago that they would not be able to meet their transport targets. This is further evidence that Alastair Darling failed to heed that warning.

"Labour's 'New Deal for Transport' has gone completely off the rails and shows no sign of getting back on track.

"The Government need to accept that they cannot build their way out of congestion or continue to turn a blind eye to the damage caused by traffic pollution. Britain desperately needs a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system."
