LIB DEMS GAIN FROM TORIES

Commenting on last nights council by-election results which saw the Liberal Democrats achieve a significant victory in Essex in winning the Hedingham and Maplestead ward from the Conservatives, Don said:

"These results show the Conservatives have stalled - the Tory Torch is nearly out!

"In real elections with real votes Michael Howard is failing to make progress. On most recent local election results he has done even worse than Iain Duncan-Smith!

"If these results are repeated in the local elections in June the Conservatives would make net losses for the first time in eight years.

"Local by-elections go on right across the country, almost every week, and we're consisitently making spectacular gains.

"Conservative spin doctors may be talking up their party's prospects but the only party doing significantly better than this time before the last election are the Liberal Democrats."
