Bath Streets set for Transformation

Commenting on two successful local bids to participate in a new national scheme, the Home Zone Challenge, Bath MP Don Foster said:

Main Image “This scheme is a Lib Dem initiative, designed to improve residents’ quality of life. I’m really pleased that a policy I’ve backed will directly benefit Bath and other B&NES residents.

“These community projects will demonstrate that our streets can be safe and welcoming public spaces where children can play, people can relax and chat, and cyclists can ride in safety.

“I hope this scheme will set a precedent for future street planning in Bath. For too long now our streets have been seen as thoroughfares for traffic. But they should be so much more than that.

“New developments like the Western Riverside project should keep the wider needs of residents in mind at all times.”

The bids (put together by Envolve and B&NES Council) fought off very tough nationwide competition to secure their grants. 300 residents in Peasedown St John and Lambridge stand to benefit from these projects, which will include environmental improvements and practical measures to make streets more attractive places for families, cyclists and pedestrians.

Cllr. Ray Cliffe comments, “I’m delighted that we’ve won extra funding to improve the amenities round Malvern Buildings. We don’t know the full details yet, but I’m hopeful that this scheme will make the area more family-friendly.”

Notes to Editors:

• The Home Zones Challenge was a Liberal Democrat initiative that formed a part of the Transport Act 2000 as a result of an amendment made by Don Foster MP.

• A total of £378,954 has been allocated to the schemes. They will operate in the Albert Avenue area of Peasedown St. John, and Malvern Buildings, in Lambridge.

• The Peasedown project will receive £218,151.00 and the Malvern project will receive £160,803.00.

• Envolve will be working closely with local residents, consulting on what improvements should be made, and B&NES will be providing the engineering expertise.
