Dated government arts targets more Ice Age than 'Cool Britannia' - Foster

30 January 2024 New Liberal Democrat research today reveals that the current Government targets to measure the uptake of arts opportunities are patronising, outdated and erratic. The figures measure how many people from excluded groups are attending, or participating in, arts activities around the UK, and are key to informing future funding decisions.

Main ImageAt present the Government's figures include:

classical music & jazz but not 'world music', carnivals & festivals

ballet but not poetry/book readings or photography

acting in a play but not directing it or designing the stage or clothes

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Culture Media and Sport Spokesmen, Don Foster MP, said:

"These targets are so out-of-date they're more Ice Age than 'Cool Britannia'.

"By Government standards, Sam Mendes, Trevor Nunn and Paul Smith could easily be regarded as not participating in the arts.

"I find it deeply worrying that arts funding is based on progress against such patronising, outdated and erratic targets.

"If the arts are to get the subsidy they deserve, Government must start afresh with indicators that capture better Britain's vibrant cultural scene."
