Broken casino pledge demands scrutiny

The Liberal Democrats today revealed that up to 249 casinos could soon be open despite a pledge by Minister for Gambling, Richard Caborn, that “we can say with certainty that there will be no more than 150 casinos”.

The new official figures obtained by Don will further undermine confidence in the Government's casino expansion plans ahead of this evening's vote.

Commenting,Don said:

"Since the Gambling Act was passed, the Government have broken pledge after pledge.

"We were promised that tackling the link between crime and gambling would be a priority but we now know the police privately had real concerns.

"We were promised tight controls over UK-based online gambling yet the Government has ensured that no operators have, or are likely to, set up in the UK.

"Today, we have proof that the Government's pledge to control the number of casinos wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

"These broken promises and doubts over the remit of the independent panel that recommended the location of the seventeen new casinos demand that this matter is referred back to an expert scrutiny committee.

"Tessa Jowell faces a rough ride this evening and she would do well to listen to the case for further parliamentary scrutiny rather than trying to buy off Blackpool opposition."
