Don joins fight to save independent midwives

Following a proposal by the Government to make professional indemnity insurance a pre-requisite for all midwives, Don has expressed his concerns about the future of independent midwives a group that is unable to take out such insurance.

Expressing his dismay at this proposition, Don said:

"Independent midwives are a priceless section of the nursing community, the epitome of choice for women at a difficult, emotional time.  Different people have different needs and to ignore that by placing severe restrictions on the options available to pregnant women is dangerous.

"A number of my constituents have contacted me to express their sadness at the potential loss of independent midwives, terming them an "invaluable resource".  The over-riding impression I have gained is that women appreciate having the opportunity to choose the type of care that suits them.

"I have written to the Secretary of State for Health, Patricia Hewitt, explaining my concerns and making it clear that I wholly support the cause of independent midwives."
