Brown’s alcohol pledge will convince nobody

Gordon Brown’s promise today to back a campaign to crack down on sales of alcohol to under-age drinkers needs to finally be backed up by action on the problem, the Liberal Democrats have said.

"Given the Government's disastrous track record on tackling binge drinking and underage drinking, it's action, not more hot air, that is needed.

"This Government has had ten years to bring problem drinking under control but has failed to do so at every opportunity.

"The most recent figures show that in one year only four licensees were convicted of selling liquor to a drunk person and that children are able to buy alcohol at 40% of licensed premises.

"It takes more than soundbites from the Prime Minister to convince anyone that this Government is capable of bringing the UK's drinking problems under control."
