Government alcohol strategy failing

Ahead of the second anniversary of Britain’s new licensing laws coming fully into force, the Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to acknowledge the failings of their alcohol strategy and to radically rethink their approach to the country’s binge drinking problems.

Commenting, Don said:

“The Government cannot continue to ignore this £20 billion a year problem - all the evidence suggests that as the availability of alcohol has increased so have the problems associated with it.

“This has never been about preventing people from drinking - it’s about the Government’s complete failure to use the laws available to it to prevent the harm that alcohol abuse is causing.

“The Liberal Democrats repeatedly warned the Government that it was dangerous to introduce 24-hour licensing without first addressing the problems of alcohol abuse.

“This Government has had ten years to bring problem drinking under control, but has failed to do so at every opportunity. We urgently need a new approach to this problem if we’re to have any chance of getting it under control.”
