“Byers must take the lead on rail safety,” Foster says.

Bath MP Don Foster today called on Transport Secretary Stephen Byers to take a lead on rail safety, following publication of an HSE report. This report revealed that only half of the improvements recommended after the Paddington disaster have been implemented by the agreed date.

Main ImageDon Foster (the Liberal Democrat Shadow DTLR Secretary) also said that two of the recommendations of the report should be revisited.

Mr Foster comments:

“Liberal Democrats raised this issue of progress on the implementation of Lord Cullen’s recommendations in January.

“Those fears have been confirmed. The Health and Safety Executive has failed to act fast enough. It clearly hasn’t been able to ensure the prompt implementation of Lord Cullen’s recommendations. But I don’t suppose Stephen Byers will be placed in administration for this unaccountable three-month delay beyond the HSE’s December deadline.

“In addition, it has now become clear that two of the recommendations may actually increase the risks to passengers when travelling by rail.

“For both those reasons it’s now crucial that the Transport Secretary brings this matter to Parliament, and holds an open and honest debate on the next steps for rail safety.”
