Bear Flat Post Office Closure will have huge impact on local residents

As part of his ongoing campaign to save Bath’s Post Offices, last Friday [28 March], Don visited Bear Flat Post Office on Wells Way to meet local residents who will be affected if the Post Office closes.

Don met with John Lewis of Shakespeare Avenue, 200 yards from Bear Flat Post Office. Mr Lewis and his wife use the Post Office regularly to send weekly food parcels to their grandson John Paul Lewis who is currently serving with 40 Commando, Royal Marines in Afghanistan.

Commenting, Don said:

"The point with Mr Lewis is this particular post office is local to him - they know him and help him and all the other pensioners here personally. The alternative for them is a huge hassle, a bus ride, a trip into the city centre, where the staff won't know them.

"The Post Office bosses are going to have to react to this. We have collected more than 2,000 signatures on a petition to save Lower Weston post office, and, staggeringly, it is approaching 2,000 signatures for Bear Flat too. I think they are going to have to listen to that.

Mr Lewis said:

"What is so good about the post office here is that the staff know all about British Forces parcels - they know the size and the weight limits and everything. They are so helpful and this is invaluable to us.

"If this post office closes, we'd have to go down in the main post office in Bath, and I shouldn't think they get many requests to send things to soldiers in Afghanistan. It would be very irritating. I would be worried that it would be too much for us.

"To close this post office would be ludicrous. It's not only us; it's all the pensioners around here."

Commenting further, Don said:

"I will continue to campaign against local Post Office closures and will be encouraging local people to respond to the consultation which closes on 9 April and make their voices heard.

"I would also encourage all residents to visit our campaign website where they can get up to date information and sign our petition against the closures."
