Don Foster MP comments on Byers’ Resignation

Bath MP, Don Foster has said in response to news of Stephen Byers’ resignation:

Main Image“Stephen Byers’ departure was delayed even longer than the trains over which he presided. He has done the right thing in resigning, but it was a pity he only mentioned the needs of the Government in his statement - and not the needs of the travelling public.
“Over the past 5 years, the Government has allowed transport policy to drift. It’s high time the Prime Minister started to reverse the pattern of failure.
“From all perspectives - road or rail, bus or train - Byers’ position had become untenable.
“This clearly is a personal tragedy for Stephen Byers. However, the most important thing is not the fate of an individual Minister, but the Government’s duty to give the British people a safe and reliable transport system fit for the twenty-first century.”
