More Pay Through Co-Operation, Not Through Striking

Don Foster MP, Liberal Democrat former Local Government Spokesman, commenting on the Fire Brigades’ Union (FBU) strike ballot result, said…

Main Image“There is no doubt that our firefighters deserve a better deal. It is crazy that the terms and conditions they work under date from 1947.

“But the public will not support a 40% rise, and a strike will put lives at risk and damage the firefighters’ case.

“An independent review into the terms and conditions of firefighters’ employment is the only way forward.

“Rather than strike, the FBU must cooperate with the Bain review to ensure that an acceptable pay and conditions package can be agreed. Striking will not make any difference to the outcome of the review.

“A joint approach is the only way to press Ministers into finding the additional funds to make a more realistic pay offer possible.”
