Foster secures MoD recognition of journalists’ safety

October 1, 2023 by Don Foster MP in Don in Parliament, News

Bath MP Don Foster has today announced that a long running campaign to see journalists’ safety recognised in the Ministry of Defence’s Green Book has been successful.

The recently-removed declaration that no journalists or media outlets would be targeted has been reinstated in the newest edition of the MoD’s guide lines. This follows on from earlier this year when Mr Foster, in collaboration with Rodney Pinder of the News Safety Institute, contacted the MoD raising their concerns.

Significant numbers of journalists are caught up in warfare or peace time conflict and are not duly protected by the nations that they serve or the publications they represent.

The next published edition of the Green Book will feature the reinsertion of the original commitment, which states: “It is important to understand that UK forces on operations will never deliberately target individual correspondents”.

Mr Foster described this as an “extremely satisfying result”, adding that “it is imperative that journalists are protected and receive the treatment that their bravery deserves when they are serving abroad”.

The awards, now in their fifth year, have provided funding and support to 49 organisations across Britain, including various charities which have used technology to help children and youth, the homeless and people with disabilities.

The awards are now open for submissions at and the deadline for entries is September 30, 2012. The Twitter hashtag for the awards is #digitalheroes.

Commenting on the awards, Don said:

“For Bath, the continuing development of the creative and tech sector is vital for our future prosperity. The city has a reputation for its creativity and is now recognised as one of the Top Ten creative cities in the UK. Organisations like Creative Bath and the Bath Digital Festival have led the way”

“Digital Heroes is a wonderful initiative which recognises the people who have worked hard to champion digital technology and made a difference to their community. I hope that projects in Bath will be able to further benefit from this year’s scheme and I will be encouraging local groups and individuals to enter the competition.”

Martha Lane Fox, UK’s Digital Champion and chair of Go ON UK, also supports the scheme:

“It’s always inspiring to meet digital champions from communities across the UK, I look forward to the Digital Heroes Awards year after year. At Go ON UK we’re pleased to get involved with an initiative that shines a light on the extraordinary things people can achieve through digital technology and I am excited that this year we have a new award that will recognise a young champion under 18 who has helped get people online.”

Dido Harding, Chief Executive of TalkTalk, said:

“Digital Heroes is the only competition of its kind, and each year attracts hundreds of nominations from people across the country. It has already made an enormous difference to dozens of important projects and I am delighted to be supporting it again this year. I look forward to seeing submissions from Bath and learning about the great digital heroes in the area.”
