Figures released today show that there is a significant educational gap in Britain. According to the Universities and Colleges Union, roughly 1 in 10 adults in the UK do not have any qualifications.

With 59,600 aged 16-64 resident in Bath, approximately 3400 have no qualifications at all.

Bath stands as 64th most qualified area out of 632 constituencies. However, 5.7% remain unqualified.

Commenting, Don Foster, MP for Bath said:

“It is good news that Bath has a comparatively high proportion of people with qualifications, which is a tribute to the excellent work by teachers and parents in our schools and colleges.

“This does not mean we can rest on our laurels: we need to ensure future generations have the same fair start in life.

“Pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are half as likely to achieve five good GSCEs.

“That is why Liberal Democrats in Government are extending free early years education to include the poorest two-year olds and are investing £976, 950 in Bath and North East Somerset in the Pupil Premium to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds right from the start of their education.

“This will make a real difference to close the remaining attainment gap and ensures everyone child has the best opportunities to excel.”
