Say YES! in Radstock

April 11, 2023 by admin in News

The campaign for a fairer voting system comes to Radstock next week, with an informal discussion evening at the Fromeway Inn.

On 5th May, as well as having local elections, the public will vote in the first national referendum since 1975 on whether or not to change the current voting system for Parliamentary elections.

Next Wednesday, Sam Lawes from Yes to Fairer Votes will lead a Question and Answer session on the benefits of the newly proposed voting system, the Alternative Vote. He commented:

“At last we have a chance to make politics work for people, not the other way round. It’s a chance for us to have a greater say in how our country is run.

I believe a voting system where people can vote for who they really want, without having the need to vote tactically is healthy and will rebuild trust in the political system.”

The Alternative Vote uses the same ballot paper as the current system, and MPs keep their constituency link. The only change being that voters can express an interest in more than one candidate, simply by ranking them in order. The candidate with a majority of over half the votes will win.

Come and find out more about the Alternative Vote at The Fromeway Inn, Radstock on Wednesday 20th April at 7.30pm.
