YES minister!

Members of the Yes to Fairer Votes campaign have been out and about on the streets of Bath recently.

Encouraging local residents to back a change in the voting system at Westminster, campaigners were out in force at the Theatre Royal last week after a performance of Yes Minister!

Coordinator Sam Lawes said:

“I always really enjoyed Yes Minister when it was on television, so I appreciate how relevant it is to the fairer votes debate.

Through fantastic pieces of comedy, the series gave us an inside view of politics and why it is so important that our politicians are working for us. Luckily, we will have the chance to do just that by voting Yes in the May 5th referendum.

It’s really enjoyable to get out there and speak to people about reforming our democracy. I hope I’ll have time to see the show myself.”

As part of the Coalition government’s agreement, a referendum on whether to change the voting system from the current ‘First Past the Post’ to the ‘Alternative Vote’ will be held all over the country.

The Alternative Vote uses the same ballot paper as the current system, and MPs keep their constituency link. The only change being that voters can express an interest in more than one candidate, simply by ranking them in order. The candidate with a majority of over half the votes will win.
